Five top flight-free holidays

By: Lyndsey Frascella

Green groups are increasingly warning about the contribution of flight emissions to climate change - but you don't have to sacrifice your holiday plans to remain environmentally friendly. The advent of modern, high-speed rail networks means that it's never been easier to take advantage of cheap, fast train travel.

Of course, you don't have to be a tree-hugger to swap the plane for a train. There are plenty of plusses to travelling by rail, including reduced costs, no boring security checks, fabulous views and lots of space to move around.

Sound good to you? In that case, why not try swapping your regular long-haul holiday for one of these rail-reachable destinations a little closer to home.

British city break: If holidaying at home makes you think of rainy beaches and leaking tents, then it's time to change your view. The UK has some of the world's most vibrant cities - from West End productions in London to sunbathing in Brighton and sightseeing around Cambridge, it's possible to have the time of your life without even leaving the country. First Capital Connect serves all these cities and generally has plenty of special offers for holidaymakers to take advantage of, so a weekend escape has never been easier.

French romance: No need to get on a plane to go overseas ? the Euro Star will get you to Paris in less than three hours from London. It's comfortable, enjoyable and hassle-free, as well as often being cheaper than flying.

Morocco: For those who want to journey further afield, it's quite feasible to journey outside Europe without setting foot on a plane. If you fancy a more exotic break, then a train trip to Morocco may just be right up your street. It takes less than 48 hours from St Pancras ? and the views along the way are an experience all in themselves. Cross France and Spain via fast TGV links, then ride the ferry to Tangier and continue south on the Marrakech Express to the Atlas Mountains.

Trans-Siberia: Travelling the Trans-Siberian Express is on many people's list of 'things to do before I die'. You can travel flight-free across Europe and then between Moscow and Beijing, detouring either via Mongolia or through the Gobi Desert. Solid proof that you really don't have to fly in order to see the world in style.

If you need any more motivation to take the train, remember that it's often possible to get discounts when travelling by rail. Look for rail cards, two for one offers and group discounts. The money you'll save is a great reason for ditching wings in favour of wheels.
