Understanding How MRE Meals Came About

There are not a lot of people that understand what a MRE meal is. These are not very common in our society but they are becoming more and more popular.

MRE stands for meals ready to eat. These are the meals that come packaged and prepare for you to eat right after you have opened them.

These meals seem to be most common in the armed forces. The reason that so many people in the armed forces are introduced to this type of food is because it is lightweight, easy to pack and nutritious.

There are a wide variety of meals that are available in MRE form. When soldiers are deployed they will usually become familiar with all of the different meals that the military offers in MRE form.

The armed forces and the government first starting handing out rations of food to soldiers during the civil war. During this time the rations were much different than they are today.

While the solder's were fighting the civil war they did not receive food that was in an MRE package. Instead they received what the government had deemed to be enough food for a full-grown adult man.

Usually this food consisted of beef, rice and peas. There was not a lot of variety in the food that they would eat and the government did not have much knowledge concerning healthy diets and meals that are well balanced.

Eventually the government began to provide canned food to the soldiers. This worked for a long time because the food had the necessary nutrients and was able to sustain soldiers during a period of war or battle.

The problem that came with canned food was that it was very heavy. Not only was the food heavy but it was cumbersome and took a lot of effort to move from one area of a battle or war to another.

After a while, the government began to provide individual soldiers with their ration. Included int the ration the soldier would be able to eat canned meat, some canned vegetables, coffee and some sugar and salt.

It was not until the First World War that the canned food was replaced by food that was either dried or salted. This allowed the soldiers that were traveling on foot to store more food and it also conserved a lot of space.

There was a period of time during the Second World War that the rations that were given out depended on what the mission of the soldier was. This helped the soldier to get the proper nutrients and the right amount of food for their job.

There were budget cuts after the Second World War that took a lot of these programs out of the armed forces. After the funding was cut many of the branches of the military returned to the canned wet foods for soldiers.

Nowadays, there are different foods for different missions and the soldiers are able to get all of the nutrients that they need. When they are in extra hot areas they are able to stay hydrated and also get all of the vitamins and minerals they need.

It was in 1963 that the Department of Defense began packaging and preparing the MRE meals that are used today. Although the meals have changed since that time, the premise of the meals is exactly the same.

Obviously, the history of these meals lies within the confines of the military. Not many people outside of the armed forces realize what these meals are and even less people have tasted these types of meals.

There is a common belief that all of the meals in these packages are not very tasty. Although taste is not the first concern of the government they have tried to make meals that the soldiers will be able to enjoy.

Some of the meals are better than others. Soldiers will probably be able to tell you which of the MRE meals has been their favorite.

Many people in the public do not realize that there are Meals Ready to Eat that are available to the public. These are great resources for people that are looking to start a food storage unit or be prepared in case of an emergency.

Even if you are going on a long hike or a campout you may find the use of these meals very helpful. They are lightweight and easily packed into a pack while still giving you nutrients that are necessary.
